Episode 103: Tim Ryan (CSIRO) - Part 2
This episode features Part 2 of my interview with Tim Ryan, who is a former Senior Experimental Scientist with CSIRO, based in Hobart. Tim’s specialty area of research is marine acoustics and his key interests have included the application of acoustic and optical technologies to understand the marine water column ecosystems, and including application to assess stocks of commercially important deep-water fish species. Although recently retired, Tim remains very active in research and continues to have involvement in some of CSIRO's acoustics work. In this Part 2 we hear Tim tell interesting and entertaining stories about various at-sea research activities including his time chasing whale sharks at Ningaloo, feasting on spit-roasted pig on a vessel in Mauritius, and another vessel trip plagued by many 'testing moments'. Among other things, he also talks of the fascinating world of micronekton and the CSIRO/IMOS program of 20 years that has acquired acoustics recordings across the global oceans from both research and commercial vessels.
