Episode 104: Revolutionary robotic hand helping in coral reef restoration...and more.
In lieu of an interview guest, in this episode Craig reads four recently published articles with marine flavours. The first article is a media release from CSIRO about a world-first designed robotic hand which is being used in the cultivation of baby corals for tropical reef restoration. The following two articles are sourced from the website of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), University of Tasmania; the first explaining why so many short-tailed shearwaters are again washing up on east and south-east Australian beaches this year, and the second on the outcomes of the recently released Tasmanian Recreational Rock Lobster and Abalone Fisheries 2023/24 Fishing Season survey. The last article, from the website of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (Townsville), features the findings of surveys of reefs at 100 sites around the Great Barrier Reef over a 14 year period, revealing fish communities are struggling to survive with increasingly frequent disturbances, including coral bleaching, floods and cyclones.
