Episode 78: Carlie Devine (CSIRO)
Craig's guest in this episode is Carlie Devine who has been a Research Technician at CSIRO for the past 12 years. She is currently in the Sustainable Marine Futures Program, within the Environment Business Unit and is a member of the Biodiversity, Imagery, Annotation, and Automation (BIAA) team, based at the Marine Laboratories in Hobart. With her background as a professional photographer and videographer, Carlie's specialty areas include marine visual technologies research, machine learning, deep sea cameras and other technologies, used to gather information that helps assess the status of animal populations and identify what is needed to ensure their survival. Her current focus includes long term monitoring of species such as the Spotted handfish and the Shy albatross. Among the many interesting things which Carlie relates, you will hear her talk very engagingly about the application of camera technologies to the fusion of science and art, her role in the recent RV Investigator SEA-MES voyage, and the planned use of a remote operated vehicle (ROV) for expanding the assessment and monitoring of the endangered handfish.
