Episode 68: Dr William White (CSIRO)

This episode features Craig’s interview with Dr William (aka "Will") White, an ichthyologist with CSIRO in Hobart, and whose areas of speciality include systematics, biology and ecology, fisheries and conservation of fishes, in particular cartilaginous fishes such a sharks, rays and skates. Will talks of his undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoc years at Murdoch University in Western Australia, including his "unusual" PhD; unusual in that it was essentially two projects in one: "Aspects of the biology of elasmobranchs in a subtropical embayment in Western Australia and of chondrichthyan fisheries in Indonesia".  Joining CSIRO's Australian National Fish Collection (ANFC) followed, and Will's career now includes a very extensive publications list, including to date, having described 75 new species of sharks and rays and 6 new species of bony fishes (teleosts), and author of several books; as lead author or co-author. You will also hear Will talk about his international collaborations and capacity building across several countries, including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Borneo, Taiwan, and United Arab Emirates, and onto his more recent research work with the ANFC on chondrichthyan egg-cases.
