Episode 53: Dr Tom Trull (CSIRO)

Craig’s interview guest in this episode is Dr Tom Trull, a marine biogeochemist with CSIRO in Hobart and whose specialty research interests include the uptake of carbon dioxide by the Southern Ocean, ocean acidification and the associated impacts on marine food-webs. You will hear Tom relate his early interest and flirtations with marine science but then his move to become a terrestrial volcanologist, before returning to the marine arena to investigate oceanic carbon dynamics. Tom also provides a wonderful, engaging description of the history of autonomous moored sensor systems applied to climate and carbon cycle science and talks of his roles in the design, deployment and recovery of these research tools. And to top it off, he relates a recent ‘too-close-for-comfort’ encounter with a dugong!
